Cell banking providers compared: commercial, institutional and the quote-only wall
A head-to-head of cell banking providers — WiCell, Cook MyoSite, uBriGene, Curi Bio and named institutional cores — on published price, what is included in the release panel, grade, turnaround, deposit-for-distribution options and who owns the resulting bank.
The short answer: the price you are quoted for “a cell bank” can differ by a factor of twenty between two honest providers, and almost none of the difference is quality. It is scope — how many vials, which release tests, at what grade, and whether the line has to be created first.
There is also a hard structural boundary in this market that every buyer hits and few anticipate. Research-grade banking has published prices. GMP banking has none, at any provider we surveyed, no exceptions. uBriGene illustrates it most cleanly: they publish a per-vial research price for a product and mark the GMP version of the identical product “Please Inquire”.

The two price structures, and why they are not comparable
The uBriGene numbers and the Gates Center numbers describe different products, and averaging them would be misleading.
uBriGene’s $1,550 to $1,860 per vial is a whole-programme price. It covers reprogramming source material into an iPSC line, clonal selection, expansion and banking. You are buying the line’s existence, not its storage. Their published process takes fibroblasts or PBMCs through mRNA-LNP reprogramming with donor cells sourced in the USA, picks clones at roughly two weeks, cryopreserves seed banks at passage 2 to 5, then expands into banks. The published donor detail for the catalogue line — Asian, female, 38, skin fibroblasts, healthy — is unusually specific for a banking product.
The Gates Center’s $539.54 for 8 to 12 vials is a service on a line you already have. That is roughly $45 to $67 per vial banked, plus $274.56 to thaw if the line arrives frozen, plus $0.07 per vial per month to keep it. Two hundred vials for ten years is $1,680 of storage — negligible against the cost of creating the bank.
Those structures answer different questions. If you have cells and need them banked, the core-facility structure is cheaper by an order of magnitude per vial. If you need a line created and banked as one deliverable, the commercial per-vial price is the comparable figure. Placing them in one price band produces a number that describes nothing.
Reprogramming-plus-banking: the twenty-times spread
Where a provider bundles line creation with banking, this is what is published (Gates Center captured 2026-09-01; Salk CTEC rate card effective 2025-07-01):

The spread between $4,941.62 and $18,559 for what a buyer would describe as “reprogram my cells into an iPSC line” is the single most useful number in this comparison. It is not a demonstrated quality gradient. It is a difference in what is bundled — how many clones are delivered, how many vials per clone, how much QC, and whether the institution charges an external for-profit rate. The Gates Center figure explicitly buys 2 to 4 clonal lines; the Salk figure is for one line with QC.
Before comparing two reprogramming quotes, normalise on three variables: clones delivered, vials per clone, and the exact QC panel. Those account for most of the spread.
Note the eligibility caveat, which is easy to miss and material: the Gates Center price list states plainly that listed prices are for researchers affiliated with the University of Colorado, and that external clients must inquire about external prices. An institutional rate you cannot access is not a price you can plan against.
What makes a bank a bank: the release panel
A bank without a test panel is a freezer box. This is where WiCell’s proposition differs structurally from everyone else’s, and it is worth stating precisely.
WiCell includes the panel in the project. Every banking project includes STR to verify identity, karyotyping for genetic stability, sterility and mycoplasma testing, and thaw recovery to confirm cultures can be re-established in your laboratory. Additional testing including expanded genetic tests or pluripotency assessment can be added. They publish no price, so we cannot compare the cost — but the scope is defined in advance rather than assembled from a menu, which removes the most common source of quote incomparability in this category.
That thaw recovery test deserves attention. It is the only release criterion in this comparison that tests the thing you actually care about — that the vials work when you open them — rather than what was true at freeze. It is also the assay most often omitted from a menu-built panel because it consumes a vial.

A minimally credible research-grade release panel — identity, mycoplasma, karyotype and one pluripotency assay — comes to $1,779.53 at Gates Center published rates. Karyotype is 52 percent of that, and it is the assay most often cut when budgets tighten.
That is a defensible decision for a working stock you will re-derive if it drifts. It is not defensible for a master bank, because the entire purpose of a master bank is that everything downstream inherits its genomic state. Cutting karyotype from an MCB saves $917.73 and transfers an unbounded liability to every future batch.
Where each provider is genuinely strongest
WiCell — defined scope, difficult cultures, and a distribution route
Three things distinguish WiCell. First, the included panel described above, with thaw recovery. Second, an explicit claim about improving starting material before banking — they state that their culturists specialise in expanding and cryopreserving difficult ES and iPS lines and often improve the quality of starting materials, illustrated with published before-and-after images showing differentiation removed from a submitted culture. If your line is troublesome, that is a specific reason to choose them over a generalist.
Third, and commercially distinctive: your banked material can either be returned to you or deposited into their biorepository of more than 1,600 cell lines for global distribution. If you intend your line to be used by other laboratories, that is a distribution channel and a banking service in one arrangement, and nobody else in this comparison offers it.
When WiCell is the wrong choice. No published price at all, so you cannot budget without a conversation. They are a stem cell specialist — ES and iPS lines — so a muscle, primary or adherent cell banking project is outside their stated scope.
uBriGene — the only published per-vial commercial price, and the clearest illustration of the wall
They publish a research-grade price for iPSC banks and they publish “Please Inquire” against the GMP version of the identical catalogue item. That transparency about where their own transparency stops is the most honest thing in this comparison, and it is why we cite them as the boundary marker.
When uBriGene is the wrong choice. The published price is for their catalogue banks reprogrammed from their sourced donor material, which is a different purchase from banking your line. Licensing is required for commercial use and is a separate conversation. GMP pricing is invisible.
Cook MyoSite — the only muscle-specific banking capability with a real GMP facility
Nobody else in this comparison manufactures muscle cells. Cook MyoSite advertises muscle and other adherent cell production, cryopreservation at any scale, manufacturing process development, procurement and processing from specific donor populations, custom media formulations, and QC analytical testing and assay development, backed by more than twenty years in muscle-derived cell therapy and a 3,470 square foot ISO 7 / ISO 5 cleanroom supporting phase-appropriate GMP.
Their analytical menu is the most specific published in this comparison: sterility, endotoxin, mycoplasma by nucleic acid amplification, bioburden, flow cytometry, custom gene expression assays, and a named desmin myogenic content assay — a lineage-appropriate identity test rather than a generic one.
When Cook MyoSite is the wrong choice. No published pricing anywhere. If your cells are not muscle or adherent, the specialisation that makes them strong does not apply. And a phase-appropriate GMP engagement is a programme with a scoping phase, not an order you place.
Curi Bio — the only published timeline anchors
Curi Bio publishes iPSC expansion and banking at 4 to 6 weeks, directed differentiation at 4 to 8 weeks and CRISPR iPSC editing at 8 to 16 weeks, stated as a workflow rather than as marketing. Those are the most useful published anchors in this market. If a banking quote promises a turnaround materially shorter than four weeks for expansion and banking, ask what step has been removed.
When Curi Bio is the wrong choice. Banking is one phase of a platform offering built around functional phenotyping, and the natural deliverable of that workflow is a dataset. Whether they will hand over a physical bank as the deliverable is a contract question rather than a listed product. No prices published.
Institutional cores — the cheapest per vial, if you are eligible
At $45 to $67 per vial banked plus $0.07 per vial per month storage, the Gates Center structure is an order of magnitude cheaper per vial than any commercial route. The Salk figures at $70 and $88 per vial for external non-profit and for-profit biobanking are also well below any commercial quote we would expect.
When an institutional core is the wrong choice. Three reasons, and they are not price. Eligibility — the published rates may not be available to you, and external tiers can differ by 25 percent, as the Salk non-profit and for-profit columns show. Grade — none of these cores advertise GMP banking. And liability — a commercial long-term storage contract typically includes monitoring, alarm response and disaster recovery obligations that an institutional freezer does not. If you are comparing an institutional rate against a commercial quote, you are not comparing the same service, and the gap is mostly liability rather than nitrogen.

What to put in a banking RFQ
Quotes are only comparable if they answer the same question. In our experience the first four cause most of the spread:
- Number of vials and cells per vial. Not “a bank”. A number.
- The exact release test panel, assay by assay, with the method for each. Mycoplasma by MycoAlert and by a nucleic acid amplification technique are different tests at different prices.
- Passage number at freeze, and the passage at which the incoming material will arrive.
- Grade: RUO, research-grade-with-GMP-documentation, or full GMP. The single largest price driver, and a binary rather than a spectrum.
- Whether thaw recovery is included, and whether it consumes a vial from your count.
- Who owns the resulting bank, and whether the provider retains any right to distribute it.
- Storage: included for how long, at what rate afterwards, and what happens if you stop paying.
- Shipping and cold chain on release, including who bears the cost of a failed shipment.
- Source-material licence. If the parent line came from a repository or a vendor, the banking provider is making copies of licensed material. Confirm that is permitted before work starts.
- Eligibility, for any institutional core, in writing, before you build a budget around a published internal rate.
