What cell banking actually costs
What master cell banks, working cell banks and research-use banks cost, what testing is bundled into each, and where the published prices stop and the quote-only wall begins. Sourced and dated figures from named providers and published institutional rate cards.
The short answer: a research-use iPSC bank is around $1,550 to $1,860 per vial from the one commercial provider we found publishing a figure, cryogenic storage runs from $0.07 per vial per month at an institutional core, and GMP master cell banking is quote-only at every provider surveyed — no exceptions, no published bands.
That asymmetry is the point of this page. The research end of cell banking has visible prices. The regulated end does not, and treating a market-report band as if it were a price will mislead you.
What you are actually buying
“Cell banking” covers three different products that get quoted very differently.

The distinction matters commercially because the price scales with the testing panel, not with the number of vials. Freezing 200 vials is not expensive. Proving what is in them is.

Reading the two very different price structures
The uBriGene figures and the Gates Center figures are not the same product, and putting them in one band would be misleading.
uBriGene’s $1,550 to $1,860 per vial is a whole-programme price. It covers reprogramming source material into an iPSC line, clonal selection, expansion and banking. You are buying the line’s existence, not just its storage. Their published process description takes fibroblasts or PBMCs through mRNA-LNP reprogramming, picks clones at roughly two weeks, cryopreserves seed banks at passage 2 to 5, then expands into banks.
The Gates Center’s $539.54 for 8 to 12 vials is a service on a line you already have. That works out to roughly $45 to $67 per vial banked, plus the $274.56 thaw if the line starts frozen, plus $0.07 per vial per month to keep it. Their price list separately shows fibroblast reprogramming to iPSC at $4,941.62 delivering 2 to 4 clonally expanded lines with 2 to 4 frozen vials each, and PBMC reprogramming at $5,156.32.
Those two structures answer different questions. If you have cells and need them banked, the core-facility structure is cheaper by an order of magnitude per vial. If you need a line created and banked as one deliverable, the commercial per-vial price is the comparable figure.

The spread between $4,941.62 and $18,559 for what a buyer would describe as “reprogram my cells into an iPSC line” is the single most useful number on this page. It is not a quality gradient that anyone has demonstrated. It is a difference in what is bundled — how many clones, how much QC, and whether the institution charges an external for-profit rate.
Before comparing two reprogramming quotes, normalise on: number of clones delivered, vials per clone, and the exact QC panel. Those three variables account for most of the spread.
The testing that makes a bank a bank
A bank without a test panel is a freezer box. This is what each assay costs, from published rate cards:

A minimally credible research-grade iPSC bank release panel — identity, mycoplasma, karyotype and one pluripotency assay — comes to $1,779.53 at Gates Center published rates ($250.00 + $134.27 + $917.73 + $477.53). Karyotype is 52 percent of that, and it is the assay most often cut when budgets tighten.
That is a defensible decision for a working stock you will re-derive if it drifts. It is not a defensible decision for a master bank, because the entire purpose of a master bank is that everything downstream inherits its genomic state.

Storage: cheap, until it is not

The Gates Center rate is a genuine per-vial-per-month storage charge: 200 vials for ten years is $1,680. That is negligible against the cost of creating the bank.
The commercial position is different and nobody publishes it. Long-term cryogenic storage at a commercial provider is normally an annual contract with a minimum, and it carries obligations for monitoring, alarm response and disaster recovery that an institutional freezer does not. If you are comparing an institutional rate against a commercial quote, you are not comparing the same service, and the gap is mostly liability rather than nitrogen.
Where the quote-only wall sits, precisely
We checked every provider we could identify. The wall is not arbitrary — it falls in a consistent place.
Published: research-grade banking of a line you already have, research-grade reprogramming at institutional cores, individual QC assays, cryogenic storage at institutional cores.
Quote only, at every provider surveyed: anything GMP, anything at manufacturing scale, anything with a defined regulatory deliverable. uBriGene publishes research-grade per-vial prices and marks the GMP equivalent of the identical product “Please Inquire”. That is the clearest single illustration of the boundary we found.
Cook MyoSite publishes an extensive contract-services description — muscle and adherent cell production, cryopreservation at any scale, procurement from specific donor populations, custom media, phase-appropriate GMP manufacturing in a 3,470 square foot ISO 7 / ISO 5 cleanroom — and no prices at all. WiCell describes cGMP and research-grade banking, karyotype, FISH, STR, SNP, flow cytometry and mycoplasma services, and publishes no prices. Curi Bio publishes phase durations but not prices.
Timelines, where published
Very few providers publish turnaround. These are the figures we could source:

Curi Bio’s phase durations are the most useful published anchors in this market because they are stated as a workflow rather than as marketing. If a banking quote you receive promises a turnaround materially shorter than four weeks for expansion and banking, ask what step has been removed.
What to put in a banking RFQ
The quotes you get back will only be comparable if you specify these. In our experience the first four cause most of the spread:
- Number of vials and cells per vial. Not “a bank”. A number.
- The exact release test panel, assay by assay, with the method for each. “Mycoplasma tested” by MycoAlert and by a nucleic acid amplification technique are different tests at different prices.
- Passage number at freeze, and the passage at which the incoming material will arrive.
- Grade: RUO, research-grade-with-GMP-documentation, or full GMP. This is the single largest price driver and it is a binary, not a spectrum.
- Who owns the resulting bank, and whether the provider retains a right to distribute it.
- Storage: included for how long, at what rate afterwards, and what happens if you stop paying.
- Shipping and cold chain on release, including who pays for a failed shipment.
- Source-material licence. If the parent line came from a repository or a vendor, the banking provider is making copies of licensed material. Confirm that is permitted before the work starts, not after.

We keep this page because banking quotes are among the hardest in this market to compare — providers scope them differently enough that two numbers for “an iPSC bank” can differ by five times and both be honest.
