Biospecimen suppliers: the directory, and the consent question nobody puts on the invoice
A directory of human and animal biospecimen suppliers — marketplaces, biorepositories, direct-to-patient collectors and animal tissue catalogues — covering prospective versus inventory collection, contracting structure, specimen classes, published prices and which vendors block verification.
The short answer: collect-to-specification is normal commercial practice in this category, not a favour, and it is why this list is worth reading before you specify anything engineered. If a passive mechanical part, a matrix source or a control tissue will do the job, real tissue collected against a written specification is faster and an order of magnitude cheaper than anything engineered.
What almost nobody publishes is a price, because a biospecimen quote is a function of cohort definition rather than of catalogue. What almost nobody puts on the invoice is the consent scope, which is the thing that determines whether you can use the sample the way you intend.

Four business models, and they are not substitutes
The word “biospecimen supplier” covers four genuinely different transactions. Picking the wrong one is the most common and most expensive error in this category.
The marketplace
iSpecimen’s model is aggregation: a single interface over a network of hospitals, biorepositories, practice groups, commercial laboratories and health information exchanges, with searchable inventory and standing collections published as available to ship now.
The structural claim is the one to evaluate, and it is not about specimens at all: “one contract, hundreds of providers.” iSpecimen manages contracting and compliance across every contributor site, so the buyer signs one agreement rather than negotiating with each hospital. Anyone who has tried to assemble a fifty-donor cohort across four institutions knows that the paperwork, not the tissue, is the schedule.
Use a marketplace when your cohort is broad, when you need many sample types at once, or when your own contracting capacity is the bottleneck. Do not use one when you need a highly specific collection protocol executed under your own supervision.
Direct-to-patient prospective collection
Sanguine’s model recruits patients directly and collects to your protocol — your cohort, your tube type, your timepoints, your processing window, under IRB. This is the right route when the collection protocol itself is the specification: when time-to-freeze matters, when you need a specific anticoagulant, when you need paired timepoints, or when the population is rare enough that inventory does not exist.
It is also the slowest and most expensive route, because you are funding recruitment.
Standing inventory
Discovery Life Sciences and BioIVT both hold large banked inventories. Inventory is fast, cheaper, and collected under someone else’s protocol to someone else’s specification. If your experiment tolerates that, inventory is the correct answer and prospective collection is money wasted.
The question that decides it: is the pre-analytical variable — time to freeze, processing method, storage history — part of your experiment or not? If it is, buy prospective. If it is not, buy inventory.
Catalogue
Innovative Research is the only organisation here with a genuine public storefront, and it is overwhelmingly animal tissue. Bovine tendon profundus at $141.00 and a US-origin Sprague Dawley rat heart at $65.00 are the kind of figures that reframe an engineering problem.
That reframing is worth stating plainly for anyone building biohybrid hardware: if what you need is a passive mechanical element — a tendon to anchor to, a compliant membrane, a matrix source, a control tissue for a mechanical test — the animal tissue catalogue solves it for two figures and ships this week. Engineered tissue costs three to four orders of magnitude more and takes months. Use engineered tissue when the requirement is living and active; use native tissue when the requirement is mechanical. Matched material from one donor is a catalogue item, and hardly anyone uses it
This is the most under-exploited capability in the whole category.
Coriell’s GM23338 record is cross-referenced to four other products from the same subject: GM23248 (the parent fibroblast line), GM20431 (a lymphoblast line), NA23248 (DNA) and HM23338 (high molecular weight DNA). One donor, five catalogue items, orderable today.
Cell Applications offers the isolation equivalent: custom isolation of different cell types from the same donor, as a standing quotable service.
iSpecimen sells “matched sets” as a named product class across both tissue and cell categories.
Donor-to-donor variation is the largest uncontrolled variable in most primary-cell experiments, and matched material eliminates it by construction. If your experiment compares two cell types, or compares a cell type against its own genotype, matched-donor material converts a confounded comparison into a clean one for no additional experimental work. It is a purchase order, not a research programme.

Consent scope is the specification nobody writes down
Every human specimen arrives with a consent that defines what may be done with it. It is almost never discussed during the quote, it is rarely visible on the invoice, and it is the thing that stops projects.
Three ways it bites:
Commercial use. A specimen consented for academic research may not be usable in a commercially-sponsored study, and the restriction follows the material rather than the buyer.
Genomic analysis and data deposition. Consent to donate tissue is not automatically consent to sequence it, and it is separately not consent to deposit the resulting data in a public repository. If sequencing is anywhere in your plan, raise it before purchase. EBiSC’s model in the stem cell world — non-identifiable data open, GDPR personal data behind a Data Access Committee — is the structure to expect, and the equivalent question should be asked of every tissue supplier.
Derivatives. If you immortalise, reprogramme or otherwise create a cell line from purchased tissue, the terms governing that derivative are set at purchase, not afterwards. This is exactly the mechanism described in cell line licensing for commercial use, and tissue buyers hit it far less prepared than cell buyers do, because a tube of tissue does not feel like a licensed product.
Ask for the consent form language, the IRB approval covering the collection, and a written statement of permitted uses including derivatives, before the purchase order. Suppliers who do this properly have the answers ready; the ones who do not are telling you something.
Cold chain is the failure mode
Native tissue arrives fresh on wet ice, frozen at −20 to −80 °C, in a dry shipper, or fixed. Those are four different receiving procedures and three of them fail silently if nobody is at the loading dock.
Innovative Research publishes fresh-on-wet-ice and frozen options with age grades (adult, calf, fetal) as order parameters, which is the right level of specification and unusually explicit for the category. For everything living, the constraint from the master directory still holds: no organisation sells cold chain for living tissue as a standalone service — every supplier books its own carrier, which makes consolidating a multi-supplier order harder than it sounds. Two practical rules. Confirm the delivery date against somebody who will physically be present, and agree in advance what happens if the shipment arrives warm — because on a prospective collection, the sample cannot be remade.
What we would ask before a first biospecimen order
- Prospective collection or existing inventory — and is the pre-analytical history part of your experiment?
- The exact collection protocol: tube type, anticoagulant, time from collection to processing, time to freeze, and who measures it.
- Consent scope in writing, including commercial use, genomic analysis, data deposition and derivatives.
- The IRB approval covering the collection, and whether your institution requires its own.
- Donor demographics and clinical annotation available, and how much of it is verified against a medical record rather than self-reported.
- Whether matched samples from the same donor are available, now or later.
- Whether the donor is recallable for a repeat draw — this is rare and enormously valuable for longitudinal work.
- Shipping format, carrier, expected transit time, and what happens on a temperature excursion.
- Minimum order and whether a pilot quantity is available before committing to the cohort.
- For animal tissue: species, age grade, anatomical site, and whether it is collected to order or from stock.
