Primary human cell suppliers: the directory, and the three numbers that decide a lot
A directory of named primary human cell suppliers with the columns that decide whether a lot is usable — passage at ship, guaranteed population doublings, the pathogen panel, donor disclosure, delivery format and published price, with the source and date for every figure.
The short answer: primary human cells are the most price-transparent category in this whole directory set, and the least specification-transparent. Six of the nine suppliers below publish a number you can read today. Only one publishes the three facts that actually determine whether the vial works: passage at ship, guaranteed remaining population doublings, and the pathogen panel the lot was cleared against.
A primary cell is a consumable with a finite life. You are not buying cells, you are buying a budgeted number of doublings before the population drifts or senesces. Almost nothing in the marketing addresses that, and the price spread between suppliers — $266 to $1,124 for cells that all say “human primary” on the tube — is mostly explained by it.

The three numbers, and why only one supplier publishes all of them
Passage at ship
Three suppliers publish it. ScienCell says passage one on every product page, Lonza says second passage cryopreserved and third passage proliferating, and PromoCell states passage after thawing as P2 on the product page. Everybody else either says “low passage” or says nothing.
The difference is not cosmetic. A primary population loses phenotype with passage — myoblasts drift toward fibroblast-like cells, endothelial cells lose junctional integrity, and the drift is monotonic. A vial at passage one with fifteen doublings ahead of it and a vial at passage four with an unstated remainder are different products at the same price.
Ask for it in writing from every supplier who does not publish it. If the answer is “we don’t track that per lot”, you have learned something material about the manufacturing.
Guaranteed population doublings
This is the number that converts a price into a cost. ScienCell guarantees 15. PromoCell states more than 15 without antibiotics. Lonza guarantees 10 for HSMM.
Lonza also does something unusual and worth crediting: it publishes, in its own knowledge base, that its high-throughput HUVEC product (00191027) is guaranteed for only 5 population doublings where all other HUVECs are guaranteed for 15, and explains exactly why. That product is pre-expanded to passage 3 and cryopreserved at 10 million cells per vial, against passage 1 and 500,000 cells for every other HUVEC, so it is designed to be thawed straight into an assay plate — and Lonza states plainly that it is therefore not suggested to further expand, subculture or bank these cells after thawing.
That is the cleanest illustration in this directory of what you are actually buying. The high-throughput vial has twenty times the cells and a third of the remaining doublings. Neither is better; they are different products for different experiments, and only one of them can seed your expansion.
Every guarantee in this table is conditional on the supplier’s own media and protocol. Lonza’s is void if non-Clonetics media or modified protocols are used. ScienCell’s is “under the conditions provided by ScienCell”. That is not a trick — it is the only way a guarantee on living material can be written — but it means a guarantee is not portable to your house medium, and the media cost is therefore part of the cell cost.
The pathogen panel
ScienCell publishes HIV-1, HBV, HCV, mycoplasma, bacteria, yeast and fungi. PromoCell publishes the broadest panel found — HIV-1 and HIV-2, HBV, HCV, HTLV-1/2, fungi, bacteria, mycoplasma. Cell Applications states freedom from bacteria, viruses and mycoplasma without itemising which viruses.
“Virus tested” is not a specification. Two suppliers can both claim it and have tested for different things. If your institution has a biosafety committee, the committee will ask for the panel, not the claim, and it is faster to get it before purchase than after the vial is in the freezer.
Delivery format is a bigger lever than most buyers realise
Cell Applications is the only supplier in this directory that will ship the same cell type as a cryovial, a T-25 flask, a T-75 flask, a 24-well plate or a 96-well plate. Everyone else ships a frozen vial and leaves the plating to you.
That matters in two directions:
- It removes a failure mode. Post-thaw attachment is where primary cell experiments most often fail, and it fails silently — you discover it three days later. Buying cells already growing in a flask moves that risk onto the supplier.
- It is not free, and it is not always available. A plated format has to be cultured, shipped warm and used on arrival, which compresses your schedule to the supplier’s schedule.
For a first experiment with an unfamiliar cell type, the plated format is usually worth it. For a programme where you will thaw twenty vials over a year, learn to thaw them.
Age grade is a specification, not a variant
Cell Applications catalogues human dermal fibroblasts in adult, neonatal and fetal grades, and skeletal muscle cells in fetal and adult, as selectable options on the same product. These behave very differently. Fetal and neonatal fibroblasts proliferate faster, deposit matrix differently and senesce later than adult cells. Neonatal foreskin fibroblasts in particular are the default in an enormous amount of published work for exactly this reason, which means they are the easiest cells to compare against the literature and the worst proxy for adult skin biology.
Pick the grade from the question you are asking, and write it into the purchase order. “Human dermal fibroblasts” without an age grade is an under-specified order that the supplier will resolve for you, in whichever direction their stock happens to sit.
Pre-screened and disease-state lots: the premium is real and it is small
Cell Applications prices the axis cleanly enough to read the market:

The muscle premium is about 15 percent. The HUVEC premium is 102 percent. That spread tells you where the screening work actually is: a pre-screened HUVEC lot is one that has been functionally characterised against a specific assay before release, and for endothelial work — where donor-to- donor variation in tube formation and permeability is notorious — that is worth more than it is for myoblasts.
The rule that falls out: buy pre-screened when your readout is functional and donor variance would be indistinguishable from your effect. Buy standard when you are going to characterise the lot yourself anyway.
Media is not an accessory, it is roughly a fifth of the programme cost
Every supplier here sells matched media, and every performance guarantee is conditional on using it. Cell Applications publishes the full ladder, which is the clearest example of how the cost actually assembles. For human skeletal muscle cells:

A single vial of HSkMC at $867 needs, at minimum, growth medium and a subculture kit — $241 — and if you intend to make myotubes, a differentiation medium at $106 on top. That is a 40 percent uplift on the cell price before anything is plated. ScienCell’s equivalent skeletal muscle medium is $154 with a $81 growth supplement.
Note the basal-plus-supplement pricing: $100 plus $103 is $203 against $168 for the same volume ready-to-use. Buying the components separately is more expensive, not less. That is the opposite of the usual intuition and it is consistent across the catalogue.
Custom isolation is a normal, quotable service
Four suppliers here advertise custom primary isolation as a standing line of business:
- Cell Applications — isolation from virtually any tissue or animal species, normal or diseased, unique donor profiles, or different cell types from the same donor, established in what they describe as a controlled cGMP culture environment, with expansion, freezing, documentation and testing included.
- ScienCell — primary cell isolations, toxicological assays and large-quantity cell cultures.
- iXCells — isolation across organs, tissues and indications, executed to the customer’s own protocol.
- Cook MyoSite — procurement from specific donor populations, with phase-appropriate GMP manufacturing behind it.
The “different cells from the same donor” offer is the one worth noticing. Matched cell types from a single donor eliminate the confound that ruins most co-culture comparisons, and it is available as a quotable service rather than a collaboration. If your experiment needs myoblasts and fibroblasts from the same person, that is a purchase order, not a research programme. What it costs is in custom cell isolation.
What we would ask before placing a first order
- Passage number at ship, and guaranteed remaining population doublings at that passage.
- Which media and protocol the guarantee is conditional on, and whether it survives a substitution.
- The full pathogen panel by name, not the claim.
- Donor age grade, sex, and any relevant clinical history — and whether you may select the donor.
- Whether the cell count is at freeze or viable post-thaw.
- Whether a lot-specific certificate of analysis is available before you commit.
- Whether the lot is in stock now or being isolated, because those are different lead times.
- For any functional endpoint: whether a pre-screened lot exists, and against which assay it was screened.
- Whether matched cell types from the same donor are available, if you will ever need a co-culture.
